Digital Photography for Kids

“A camera is a tool for learning how to see without a camera.” (Dorthea Lange, American Photojournalist, 1895-1965)

Homeschooled students will develop an all new appreciation for the world around them in the “Introduction to Digital Photography” winter workshops at Compass! Students will learn about balance and symmetry in photographs along with composition, placement of subject, lines, color, lighting/shadow, and perspective (like bug’s eye view!)

Each week, a new photographic technique will be introduced by examining sample photographs. Then students will bundle up and head outdoors to take scenic winter shots or explore indoors for unique architectural angles. Students will also receive tips on how to better operate their cameras and adjust settings. (For this class, students should have any digital camera better than a cell phone camera, such as a point-and-shoot). The last day of the class will be a discussion and exhibition of students’ best work for parents. There are two sessions offered:

  • Wednesdays, 10:00 am- 10:55 am (for 5th-6th graders)
  • Wednesdays, 11:00 am- 11:55 am (for 7th-8th graders)

These are 8 week classes that meet on Wednesdays at Compass in Oakton starting January 11. Remember, our photography classes are only offered once a year! They are taught by Angela Goodhart, a professional photographer and owner of Goodhart Photography. (Remember, Angela is the lovely and very talented photographer who takes our fall school pictures, and she is a former homeschool parent herself.) Register online for this class or others (receive a 10% early registration discount when you sign up by December 16.)

The following photos were taken last winter by a 5th grader in Angela’s class! Do you recognize these scenes around the Compass campus?
