MATHCOUNTS Team

MATHCOUNTS is a parent-facilitated club for homeschooled middle school students in 6th-8th grade who love challenging math. MATHCOUNTS is a national middle school mathematics competition program that boosts confidence, builds problem-solving skills and mathematical reasoning, and fosters achievement through four levels of fun, in-person “bee” style contests. Read below for more information.

About

Students will enjoy the camaraderie and teamwork of working as a group to solve math challenges. Weekly meetings will consist of solving MATHCOUNTS-style problems as a group, math games, and practice questions. The team’s work will culminate in a Northern Virginia-area competition in February, with some teams moving on to state and national competitions in the spring.

Eligibility

Participants should be strong in math and at minimum Algebra I level. Because of the way competition areas are defined, competing members of the Compass MATHCOUNTS team must reside in Northern Virginia. Maryland students are welcome to meet with and practice alongside the Compass-based team but will need to register to compete in a Maryland-based competition.

Class Schedule

MATHCOUNTS meets every Thursday afternoon from 3:00 pm- 4:00 pm at Compass.

Registration

Participants are asked to sign-up for MathCounts on the Compass Activities Page. Compass students must pay a $32.00 fee which includes national registration and transaction fee. Non-Compass students must pay a $47.00 fee which includes national registration, transaction fee, and a facilities/activity fee.
