Prompted to Write: College Essay-Writing Workshop

“Describe a problem you’ve solved….”

“Reflect on a time when….”

These are the openings from two of this year’s five Common Application Essay Prompts. Such vague, broad writing directives can strike fear into the hearts of teens and adults alike! In this 4-hour workshop, Writing Coach Anne Sharp will guide homeschooled high school students through the process of tackling and deciphering prompts and writing a compelling personal essay for admission to college, competitive programs, awards and scholarships.

WHO?     

  • 12th graders applying to college
  • 11th graders who want to complete a solid draft for next year
  • 9th/10th graders who want to develop a personal narrative for their own portfolio

WHAT?  

  • Find out what admissions staff and selection committees are looking for.
  • Explore the types of personal writing required
  • Brainstorm, narrow, and select a meaningful personal experience
  • Draft, revise, receive feedback, fine tune, and finish!

WHEN?

  •  Friday Sept. 23 (two-hour group seminar), 12:00 pm- 2:00 pm
  •  Friday, Sept. 30 (1-hour small group workshop) chose from 12:00 – 1:00 pm or 1:00- 2:00 pm
  •  Week of Oct. 3rd (individual session) by Skype, phone call or in-person meeting
