New Star Wars Classes for Homeschoolers- Start Jan. 13!

Is your family one of millions who has seen the new Force Awakens movie and now talks about “all things Star Wars?” You can harness some of that Star Wars mania and turn it into homeschool lessons! Compass has several special classes scheduled this winter for Star Wars enthusiasts and those just learning about the epic adventures:

Jedi Master Engineering with LEGO (grades 3-6)

Learn about the engineering principles and elements of mechanics such as gear trains, worm drives, pneumatics, gear ratios, and eccentric motion while constructing Star Wars-themed projects such as X-Wings, Pod racers, Star Destroyers, Cloud Cities, AT-AT walkers, and fortresses. (Wednesdays 10:00 am – 11:30 am)

Jedi Jr. Engineering with LEGO (grades K-2)

Junior engineers will learn about and build basic engineering concepts such as motors, catapults, unitized construction, wheel/axles, levers, and more as they build Star Wars themed projects like X-Wings, R2-units, energy catapults, defense turrets, and space settlements. (Wednesdays 10:00 am – 11:30 am)

Jr. Robotics: Space Battles (grades 1-2)

Beginning engineers will construct animated robotic creations and learn basic computer skills with LEGO WeDo visual programming platform to build speeder bikes, pod racers, motorized walkers, space doors, and launchers for their Star Wars LEGO characters while learning about gears, pulleys, motors, cams, levers, sensors, etc. No programming experience necessary. (Wednesdays, 3:00 pm- 3:55 pm)

Robotics Challenge: Command Base Mars (grades 5-6)

Become a robotics engineer to solve challenges that a team would face settling a futuristic rebel base on Mars (or any other planet!) Students will design, create, program, and test robots to solve challenges using the LEGO EV3 technology and laptops. No programming experience necessary. (Wednesdays, 1:00 pm- 1:55 pm)

Stage Combat: Stunning Sword Scenes from Stage and Screen (grades 7-12)

This is the instruction that any new Jedi or Sith fighter needs to properly wield a lightsaber or other galactic weapon. Stage combat is the art of creating the illusion of violence for storytelling in theatre and film. Students will learn sword fighting choreography and dialogue to recreate a well-known fight scene. (Fridays, 11:00 am – 11:55 am)
