Math Kangaroo & AMC 8 at Compass

Compass has some upcoming math opportunities for students of all ages:

Math Kangaroo Competition

Compass will administer the annual Math Kangaroo competition. Math Kangaroo is an international contest that will be held on Thursday, March 16, 2023. Compass is hosting three test sessions at: 10:00 am, 1:00 pm, and 4:30 pm. Students in grades 1-12 will take a 75-minute test with fun and interesting math challenge questions. Prizes and recognitions are provided for all participants and for top scorers. For more contest info, see the Compass Math Kangaroo webpage. Visit the Math Kangaroo website for example and practice problems.

Participants must register through the Math Kangaroo USA website by December 15. Look for the option to “Register for an In-Person Center (Public)” to find Compass.

AMC 8 Math Competition

The AMC 8 will be administered on Thursday, January 19, from 3:30 pm- 4:10 pm. The test is geared for 8th graders. Younger students who are accelerated in math may also take the test, but students must be under age 14-1/2 to participate.

The AMC 8 is a 25-question, 40-minute multiple choice exam sponsored by the Mathematical Association of America. The test promotes problem-solving skills and analytical thinking through challenge problems. Test topics are based on a typical middle school mathematics curriculum to include counting and probability, estimation, proportional reasoning, elementary geometry including the Pythagorean Theorem, spatial visualization, everyday applications, and/or reading and interpreting graphs and tables. Questions may also involve linear or quadratic functions and equations, coordinate geometry, and other topics traditionally covered in a beginning algebra course. More information, including sample problems, can be found on the competition webpage. Register for the AMC 8 on the Compass Activity Fees webpage.
