Featured Workshop: Shakespeare Off the Page

Read it! Act it! Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night comes to life…off the page in this unique workshop for teens!

  • Better a witty fool, than a foolish wit.
  • What is decreed must be, and be this so.
  • Give me some music! Now, good morrow, friends!

Decipher and dramatize these famous quotes. Meet Viola, Orsino, Olivia, Sebastian, Malvolio and other wacky characters in this mixed-up tale of mistaken identities, star-crossed lovers, and scheming adversaries.

The class will explore Shakespeare’s timeless comedy, analyze its characters, plot, themes and motives. Students will read different roles, study and act out scenes, and practice monologues, while having fun with fellow teens. Theatre games will be used to encourage collaboration, and specially-designed improv exercises will be used to stretch teens’ imaginations and help them get “in character.”

Teens will enjoy this two-hour, 10-week workshop with Shakespearian coach Heather Sanderson who hails from England and is known for instilling a love of Shakespeare into the hearts of students. Her approach brings abstract concepts, complex themes, and difficult language to the students’ level, so that they can relate to and appreciate Shakespeare.

This workshop meets on Fridays at Compass from 11:00 am- 12:55 pm starting September 15. The class is for teens in grades 8-12 (mature 7th graders are welcome). Register for this program or others online.
