Compass News & Announcements: Year-End Wrap-Up

Congratulations on reaching the end of your homeschool year, and thank you for a fantastic 12th Compass year! There are still a few Compass happenings this week: make up classes, annual Quads Chess Tournaments, and Picnic & Park Day. Following are a few notes and reminders:

(1) Summer Registration is open for more than 5 dozen summer workshops. Summer workshops are half-day special topics, and most meet for just 1, 2, 3, or 4 days. There is a 10% early registration discount offered through May 31 on Summer Workshops. Download the summer flier or review summer options online.

(2) Fall Registration is open for more than 200 classes in all subject areas, for grades K-12. An early registration discount of 10% is offered through June 14. Review the schedule and register online.

SPECIAL EVENTS

(4) Annual Homeschool Quads Chess Tournament: LAST CHANCE…Registration will close on Tuesday evening at 5:00 pm for our two, annual Quads Chess Tournaments. Homeschooled chess players ages 6-16 are invited. AM and PM tournaments on Wednesday, May 22. Register on the Activity Fees page.

(5) Year-End Picnic & Park Day: Current and new Compass families can still sign up to come to our annual, drop-in Picnic & Park Day from 12:00 pm- 4:00 pm at Bready Park in Herndon. Organized field day games start run from 1:00 pm- 2:15 pm, otherwise there is free-play and playground time. Bring unwanted homeschool curriculum items for a FREE swap and give-away. Sign up online.

(6) Dulles Area Summer Band Camp will be held at Compass for 5, half-days: July 29 – August 2 from 9:00 am – 12:00 pm. This is for beginner band members on woodwinds, brass, and percussions (less than 6 mo. experience on instrument). For more details, see the band camp webpage, and register online.

RESOURCES

(7) Year-End Evaluations: Compass writing teacher Shannon McClain is scheduling year-end evaluations to meet Virginia’s Evidence of Progress requirement. She can perform evaluations at Compass or at an alternate location. Families should contact her directly through her business, Educational Advocacy & Support, LLC or stop by the Compass front desk or office for her information.

(8) Questions: Many families have questions this time of year about classes, scheduling, accounts, high school requirements, getting started, Virginia requirements, and more! Families can schedule a time to meet with the Compass Director. Current families can schedule a 20-minute consultation. New/Prospective families can schedule a 40-minute tour with Q& A.

CLUBS/EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES

(9) Alpha Rho, the Compass chapter of the Homeschool National Honor Society is accepting applications for new members for next year! Students in 9th-12th grade are encouraged to apply. 8th graders taking high school level courses are welcome. Homeschooled high school students who do not come to Compass are also welcome. (10) High School Mock Trial Team: The Compass High School Mock Trial Team has auditions on June 1 and June 8. If you were unable to come to the information session and would like more information, email the team at: compassmocktrial@gmail.com

(11) Compass Clubs are on break for summer, but it is never too early to think about new clubs and afternoon activities for next year. Parents who might be interested in facilitating a club next year should contact Compass to discuss.
