Summer is coming and ‘tweens and teens might have an opportunity to supervise siblings, watch neighborhood children, or serve as aids in a summer camp. BLAST (Babysitters Lessons and Safety Training) is a highly interactive and energetic class will get them ready for new responsibilities with many necessary sitter skills and basic first aid. Students will use role playing to explore common scenarios they might encounter as babysitters. The workshop will cover minor emergencies, but its focus is on sitter basics, injury prevention, safety, kid activities, and getting the job. This is a 4-hour workshop that will be offered on Wednesday, April 27, from 1:00 pm- 5:00 pm. Participants will receive a colorful course booklet and certification card. This workshop is appropriate for boys and wells as girls, ages 11-15 (grades 5-9). Participants are asked to bring a baby doll or stuffed animal (like a teddy bear) to be used for some of the activities (choking, diapering, etc.) All other materials are furnished. Register online.

BLAST will be taught by ETR (Emergency Training Resources) of Ashburn. The course is associated with the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and the Emergency Care & Safety Institute (ECSI). ETR provides annual certification courses for nearly 10,000 people, meeting national, state, and local regulatory requirements for CPR, AED, first aid, bloodborne and airborne pathogens, sport first aid and injury prevention, wilderness first aid, ACLS, lifeguarding, and OSHA safety. ETR’s instructors include healthcare professionals such as nurses, paramedics, EMTs, certified safety professionals, certified personal trainers, and lifeguards.
