Get Involved! Clubs, Teams, and Activities at Compass this Year!

Compass has a variety of clubs and teams planned for the coming year! Some are open only to Compass students, and some are open to others in the homeschool community. Follow links below for more information and to sign up.

 Alpha Chapter, Homeschool National Honor Society (8th-12th grade)

Alpha Rho is a student-led organization promoting scholarship, academic excellence, networking, service projects, and socials. 8th graders must be taking a high school level course to qualify. All students must submit a test score in the 90th+ percentile with application.

Astronomy Club (7th-12th grade)

The Astronomy Club consists of space enthusiasts who discuss current events and discoveries in the field of astronomy and work on the Pulsar Search Collaboratory project. Members must be age 13.

Characters Club (1st-4th grade)

Character Club is an “afterschool” club for imaginative play and active fun. Beloved acting teacher “Miss Judy” (Judith Harmon) will play favorite kid soundtracks and lead sing-alongs and movement-based games and dances such as conga lines, the Macarena, shuffle, and more. Each week she will open her treasure box of costume accessories (hats, vests, masks, tiaras, capes, etc) for kids to transform into fun characters as they sing, dance, and play. Kids are welcome to bring costumes from home.

Civil Air Patrol (ages 12-18)

The William P Knight Composite Squadron of Civil Air Patrol serves the community through education, service, and emergency response/preparedness. Youth members (“Cadets”) focus on aerospace and cyberspace education, character development, leadership, physical fitness, and community service.

  • Thursdays from 7:00 pm- 9:00 pm, weekly

Compass Collaborative Student Newspaper (4th-12th grade)

Student newspaper staff work under the direction of an advisor to create a quarterly newspaper consisting of Compass news, creative writing, short stories, poetry, teacher interviews, reviews (movie, video, book, or toys), puzzles, riddles, jokes, photos, artwork, comics, or opinion pieces. Guest submissions accepted.

Crafty Kids Club (2nd- 5th grade)

Kids in grades 2-5 (ages 7-10) stay “after school” to socialize and make themed crafts using a wide variety of materials and techniques.

Dungeons & Dragons Club (ages 13+)

Teens ages 13+ meet to play D & D fantasy roll playing game in groups of 5-6 with one experienced player being the “dungeon master” (DM). The groups will begin with one- or two-session short campaigns before determining who is interested in longer campaigns. New and experienced players welcome.

First LEGO League Robotics (5th-7th grade)

FIRST LEGO League (FLL) is an accessible, guided, beginners’ robotics competition that encourages teamwork, discovery, innovation, and problem-solving. The competition is comprised of the Robot Game, an Innovation Project, and Core Values. FLL team members engage in brainstorming, research, design, and coding while practicing the engineering design process of building, testing, re-building, re-testing, etc.

  • Mondays and Wednesdays from 6:00 pm- 8:00 pm and Saturdays from 11:00 am- 2:00 pm, weekly 
  • Started August 19
  • Minimum age 11 by September 30
  • Experience through Compass’s Robotics Training Team, Robot Fab Lab, or equivalent preferred

Future Leaders’ Club (grades 9-12)

Teens will learn the art of networking, principles of leadership, conflict resoloution, public speaking, how to sell an idea, product, or even themselves! They will hold practive interviews, do creative and critical thinking, collaboration work, team building, and other key skills for succeeding in the world and being a leader. The group will have input and vote on activities and guest speakers.

Girl Scout Troop 3327 (Kindergarten – 12th grade)

Girls ages 5-18 are invited to participate in Girl Scouts as Daisies (K, 1st grade), Brownies (2nd-3rd grade), Juniors (4th-5th grade), Cadettes (6th-8th grade), Seniors (9th-10th grade), or Ambassadors (11th-12th grade).

  • Thursdays from 3:15 pm- 5:30 pm, 3X per month
  • 1st and 2nd weeks are meeting at Compass
  • 3rd week is a field trip/ fun day throughout northern VA

Homeschool String Ensemble (4th-8th grade)

Homeschooled violin, viola, cello, or bass musicians at an advanced beginner to intermediate level play with others in an ensemble.

Kids’ Game Day (Ages 8-13)

Kids ages 8-13 get together to play board games, card games and enjoy social time.

  • Location will either be at Haley M Smith Park (outdoors) or Suite C Commons (indoors). Watch for weekly reminders from the organizer

Kids’ Knit & Crochet Club (ages 7-12)

Kids who enjoy knitting and crocheting are invited to share their creations and work on in-progress projects. Beginners are welcome: additional yarn and needles are available, and adult facilitator and other kids will share their know-how (note: this is not an organized class.)

  • Thursdays from 3:00 pm- 4:00 pm, one time per month
  • Starts September 28
  • Students will be asked for email addresses to get announcements/reminders
  • This is a drop-in for Compass or non-Compass students
  • Students bring their own supplies, and some donated materials are available. There is no cost to participate.
MOEMS Math Club (4th-6th grade)

Upper elementary math enthusiasts are invited to meet, practice, and prepare for the MOEMS Competition (Math Olympiads for Elementary and Middle Schools). Advanced 3rd graders are welcome.

  • Students will complete math activities and challenge problems as a group and take practice quizzes to prepare for the MOEMS competition.

Middle School Social Club (ages 12-14)

Middle school-aged kids (12-14) will meet twice a month for social activities with one meet-up each month at Compass for games/snacks, one meet-up at a nearby destination/venue such as mini golf, fall festivals, trampoline park, and other special/seasonal events.

  • Starts September 13 with Ice Cream Social at Compass
  • Additional dates: 9/27, 10/25, 11/8, 12/6 (off site) and 10/11 (at Compass)
  • Students will be asked for email addresses to get announcements of planned activities
  • This is a drop-in for Compass students only
  • Individual families will pay the cost of admission and activity fees.
Minecraft Club (grades 5-8)

Kids who enjoy building and exploring the beloved block world are invited to join and play together in a shared, collaborative Minecraft world. Minecrafters will meet in real life to enter the friends-only (secure/private) make-believe universe through their laptop portal.

  • Mondays from 3:00 pm- 4:30 pm, bi-weekly

  • Students should have some piror experience with Minecraft
  • Students bring their own laptops with Minecraft Bedrock edition installed and account established.

Mock Trial Team (9th-12th grade)

Teens strong in public speaking, debate, or acting, or interested in law portray witnesses and attorneys in a mock murder case. Interest meeting and auditions for the team are held in May.

PenPoint Literary & Arts Magazine (9th-12th grade)

Teen writers serve as authors and editors for annual literary and art anthology. PenPoint is run as a weekly class. Contributing writers and artists in 7th-12th grade will be invited to submit fiction, essays, poems, art, and photography 2nd semester.

  • Students are encouraged to take the optional, ONLINE first semester class, Creating and Curating a Personal, Digital Portfolio, to develop their work for second semester work on the publication.

TGIF Teen Game Night (ages 13+)

Teens ages 13+ play board games, card games and enjoy social time

  • Meets weekly on Fridays from 4:30 pm- 6:30 pm
  • Starts September 8, 2023
  • This is a drop-in for Compass teens only. Teens must have a current Teen Form on file.
  • There is no cost for Compass students to participate
Teen Jam Night (ages 13+)

Teens ages 13+ may bring their instruments to play songs together and socialize over an interest in music. Bring own instruments (no amps/speakers allowed).

  • This is a drop-in for Compass teens only. Teens must have a current Teen Form on file.

Teen Social Committee (ages 14+)

Teens ages 14+ are invited to serve on a committee to plan the Fall Teen Party, Winter Snow Ball, and spring Prom.

  • Fridays from 3:00 pm- 4:00 pm, bi-weekly
  • Starts September 29, 2023
  • Committee members will work with an advisor to plan details such as theme, food, decor, music, venue, and activities for teen parties.

  • This is an in-person committee for Compass students only.
  • There is no cost for Compass students to participate
