Compass is an approved Educational Service Provider for the West Virginia Hope Scholarship program. Each quarter, several Compass classes will be listed in the WV portal. However, our full course catalog will not be published there due to the challenges of maintaining duplicate listings and the risk of over-enrollment in classes.
Families wishing to use West Virginia Hope Scholarship funds through Compass should follow the steps below.
Qualified WV Families
West Virginia has expanded its Hope Scholarship program to include K–12 homeschooled students with an Individualized Instruction Plan (IIP) beginning with the 2026–27 school year. The program provides state funding that may be used for a wide range of homeschooling expenses, including eligible classes, workshops, camps, programs, and services offered by Compass.
Families are responsible for completing all application, documentation, qualification, and renewal requirements directly through the West Virginia Hope Scholarship program before registering for Compass offerings. Families should be fully accepted and approved for Hope Scholarship funds before enrolling at Compass. Families should not register while they are still waiting to qualify, anticipating acceptance, or assuming they will be approved.

Qualifying Expenses
As itemized in the Hope Scholarship Family Handbook, most Compass expenses, including classes, tutoring, private lessons, workshops, educational programs, class supply/lab fees, some club fees, educational assessments, and standardized testing would count as “qualifying expenses.” Social activities at Compass such as parties, dances, ski trips, etc. do not appear to be qualifying expenses. Following is a partial list of pertinent qualifying expenses:
- Tuition and fees for programs of study, curriculum, or supplemental materials in reading, language, mathematics, science, social studies, or the arts (also Compass kindergarten, preschool, music, dance, drawing, painting, mosaics, chorus, guitar, drumming, band, violin/strings, etc.);
- Tuition and fees for programs of study, curriculum, or supplies needed for supplemental or elective educational courses (Compass French, Spanish, ASL, Japanese, coding, robotics, cooking, chess, PE, fencing, swimming, martial arts, outdoor classes, magic, sewing, fashion, filmmaking, gymnastics, personal finance, role-playing, social skills, etc.);
- Fees for after-school or summer education programs (Compass summer workshops and afternoon programs);
- Tutoring services provided by an individual or a tutoring facility (Tutoring by Compass instructors);
- Educational services and therapies, including, but not limited to, occupational,behavioral, physical, speech-language, and audiology therapies (Structured Language Arts (Reading Ready) taught by Nidhi Tandon);
- Tuition, fees, and materials for enrollment in dual credit or college level courses (Marymount University Dual enrollment classes at Compass);
- Certified teacher annual reviews of a Student’s academic work (Evidence of Progress evaluator service, Compass 2 College Program);
- Fees for nationally standardized assessments, advanced placement examinations, aptitude testing, any examinations related to college or university admission, and tuition and/or fees for preparatory courses for the aforementioned exams (BASI year-end Evidence of Progress testing and SAT/PSAT Skills & Strategies Workshop).
Frequently Asked Questions
We homeschool our children and live in West Virginia. Do we qualify to receive Hope Scholarship funds?
Probably. According the Hope Scholarship Parent Handbook, beginning in the fall 2026, WV homeschool families are eligible to receive the funds. “Effective for the 2026-2027 school year, Hope Scholarship eligibility expands to include all students eligible to be enrolled in a West Virginia public school in grades K-12 at the time of application for a specific school year. Existing private school and traditional homeschool students who have not previously been eligible for the Hope Scholarship Program will be eligible to participate beginning in the 2026-2027 school year.”
We live in West Virginia, but Compass is located in Herndon, Virginia. Are we going to be able to use our Hope Scholarship funds there?
Yes. The West Virginia Hope Scholarship program allows providers from outside WV to provide services to West Virginia families. Compass completed qualifications for the program in March 2026 and is now listed in the vendor Marketplace. The Parent Handbook lists, “Payments to out-of-state public schools for tuition and fees” as qualifying expenses.
What documentation do we need to prove our status as a Hope Scholarship-receiving family when we register for Compass classes?
Families must list WV as their home state when entering their address in their Family Profile. The option to select WV Hope Scholarship will only appear when WV is noted in the family’s account. The family must provide each student’s WVEIS number at the time of registration.
We live in West Virginia but have not yet completed the Hope Scholarship application process. Can we register for Compass classes now and finish the scholarship process later? If we are not approved, can we just drop the classes?
No. Families should not register for Compass classes, workshops, camps, programs, or services until they have been fully approved for Hope Scholarship funds.
Registration at Compass is a financial commitment. Families who register while hoping, expecting, or waiting to receive Hope Scholarship funds are still responsible for all Compass fees if those funds are not approved, delayed, unavailable, or insufficient.
If Hope Scholarship funds do not cover the full Compass balance, the family is responsible for paying the remaining amount out of pocket.
I have other questions about applying, eligibility, fund amounts, moving, aging out, working with providers, etc., etc.
West Virginia families should direct all other questions to the West Virginia Hope Scholarship Program for all other program details.
