Prompted to Write: College Essay-Writing Workshop

Description:

"Describe a topic, idea, or concept you find so engaging that it makes you lose all track of time” or “Discuss an accomplishment, event, or realization that sparked a period of personal growth and a new understanding of yourself or others.” These are just two of the six Common Application (Common App) Essay Prompts. Such open-ended and broad directives can be daunting, but they are designed to help your teen seize the opportunity to make their personal statement a unique snapshot of who they are, what they are passionate about achieving, and the ways in which they will enrich their future college community.

In this 5 hour workshop, writing coach Dr. Anne Taranto will guide students through the process of tackling and deciphering prompts and writing a compelling personal essay for admission to college, competitive programs, awards and scholarships. The product of this workshop will be a complete essay from a required prompt that students can use for the common app, supplemental college essays, for other applications, competitions, or for a personal portfolio.

This workshop will consist of two 2 hour group meetings and a one-hour, individual session.

During the first session, the group will read and analyze personal essays that earned students placement in the colleges of their choice, learn strategies for writing their own, and get a glimpse of what admissions staff and selection committees are looking for. Dr. Taranto will lead students through the process of brainstorming, narrowing, and selecting a meaningful personal experience that they can develop into a polished personal essay.

During the second session, students return with a first draft of their essay to receive feedback from the writing coach and peers for development of a second draft.

Finally, a one-hour individual session will be scheduled in person or virtually at a mutually convenient time to allow the writing coach to work individually with the student to fine-tune and polish his/her essay into a third (and possible final) draft.

This workshop is designed for 12th graders who are currently going through the college application process or for 11th graders who want to complete a solid draft of a personal essay for next year's admission cycle. 9th and 10th graders are welcome to take the workshop to develop writing skills for other applications.

Workshop meetings are on Saturdays- January 17 and 24, from 10:00 am-12:00 pm. This workshop is open to non-Compass teens.
