Two New Classes Led by Labyrinth Game Shop of DC!
Great news! Labyrinth Game Shop from Capitol Hill in DC is returning to Compass! Many kids enjoyed Labyrinth’s “Board Game Design and Innovation” classes last fall. Check out the two new concepts Labyrinth is introducing at Compass this spring! Learn the history of games and character development in all new twists on the concept of “educational” games!
Creativity Through Role-Playing Games
Wednesdays, 11:00 am – 11:55 am
This class will focus on the writing and story-telling aspects of tabletop role-playing games. Tabletop role-playing games, or RPGs, are “pen and paper” games where the rules are set out in a book, and gameplay relies on the players’ imaginations. RPGs often feature a “game-master” or a narrator that invents the villains and challenges, and narrates other players through the action. Students will challenge their creativity and writing skills by learning how to create great characters to play in various different RPG games, such as Do: Pilgrims of the Flying Temple and Project Ninja Panda Taco, and how to cooperatively tell stories. The class will also focus on stretching students’ imaginations with “world-building”, where each student will create setting elements for Dungeons & Dragons and the Fate Core RPG System.
Exploring the History of Games
Wednesdays, 10:00 am – 10:55 am
Students will learn about the progression of board games from the beginnings of civilization until today, from the very first games of chance in Mesopotamia and Ancient Egypt, through the development of more sophisticated strategy games in Rome, Africa, and the Middle East, all the way up to the complex designer board games popular today. By playing and learning the history behind games like backgammon, the Game of Ur, Senet, Go, chess, Mancala, Nine Men’s Morris and more, students will take a trip through the history of human civilization.
These are 8-week classes that begin on March 25 and are held on the Compass campus in Oakton.
Registration is open for these classes and more than 30 others on the Compass Registration page!
