News & Announcements: Week of March 6-10

(1) Spring Registration is open and ongoing. Spring classes begin the week of March 20. Check the schedule because classes are filling, and more than 40 are on waitlist.

(2) Last Week of Classes/Make-Up Week: This is the last week of classes for most 3rd quarter classes. See the list below for make-up classes that will be held the week of March 13-16. Year-long and semester-long classes that do not have make-ups will not meet next week.

(3) Easter Candy Kitchen: Learn to make Buttercream Easter Eggs with an array of spring fillings (peanut butter, cherry, vanilla, chocolate, and coconut) with Chef Mimi in this 3-hour workshop. Two sessions on March 26: Kids (2nd-6th grade) and Tweens/Teens (7th-12th grade).

(4) First Aid/CPR: A spring session of 6-hour (2 afternoons) First Aid/CPR training for teens ages 14+ will be offered on April 24 and May 1. Earn 4 American Heart Association certifications and get ready and get ready for summer work as a life guard, camp counselor, or babysitter. Register HERE.

(5) Year End Evaluations: It is the time of year that many families begin to think about the Virginia-required “Evidence of Progress” (EOP) for their homeschooled students. This can be accomplished through a meeting with an evaluator or a standardized test administered at home. Compass writing teacher Shannon McClain performs year-end homeschool evaluations including some meet-ups at Compass. Contact her at her business, Educational Advocacy & Support, or stop by the Compass office to schedule an evaluation time slot.

(6) PenPoint Submissions Needed: The annual Compass literary and arts anthology, PenPoint, is now accepting submissions for its 2023 publication. Students in grades 7-12 can submit fiction, poetry, essays, and 2-D art/photographs. Read submission guidelines online or contact compass.penpoint@gmail.com

(7) New: Future Leaders Club: Interested students will meet 4 times in 4th quarter as a pilot for next year. Future Leader club is for teens in 9th-12th grade. Students will learn networking, principles of leadership, conflict resolution, public speaking, starting a business, creative and critical thinking, team-building, collaborative work, interview practice, etiquette for a business lunch/dinner, etc. Members will take turns preparing topics. Parents or community members may be invited as speakers. This spring, the group will decide student leadership structure and plan for topics in 2023-24. No dues for spring 2023. (8) Make-Up Classes: Make-ups are scheduled for the week of March 13-17 for 3rd quarter classes that were missed because of instructor illness/absence. The following classes will meet at their regular time, regular day, and regular room.
