News & Announcements: Week of April 14-21
(1) Annual Used Curriculum Sale: The annual multi-family Used Curriculum sale will be held next week on Wednesday, April 19 (rain date April 26). Additional Compass sellers are invited to participate. Current registered families received a Sign Up Genius link to sell. Families will be selling pre-owned and gently used curricula, workbooks, textbooks, fiction and nonfiction books, reference books, manipulatives, educational games, science or craft kits/sets from 10:30 am- 2:30 pm. Shoppers should bring cash and tote bags.
(2) Spring Marketplace: Sign-ups are being accepted for the annual Spring Marketplace where students and parents sell homemade items such as crafts, jewelry, baked goods, home-grown seedlings, and more. It will be held on Wednesday, May 3 (rain date May 10). Current registered families received a Sign Up Genius link to sell. Check out the slideshow from our 2013-2019 sales for merchandise ideas.
(3) Spring Prom: Tickets are on sale for the 2023 “Garden Gala” prom for Compass students ages 14+ on Saturday, May 6, from 7:00 pm- 10:00 pm at the Hidden Creek Country Club in Reston. Interested teens can learn more on the Prom on the Event Information webpage and purchase tickets on the Activity Fees webpage.
(4) Animal Kingdom Alive- One Day Passes: Each Monday, Compass has live animal programs from 1:00 pm – 1:45 pm and 2:00 pm- 2:50 pm. Families can purchase 1-day passes to see: Woodland Mammals (4/17); Ocean Vertebrates (4/24), and Exotic Mammals (5/1) on the Activity Fees webpage.
(5) Mother’s Day Chocolate Bouquet Workshops: Kids can join Chef Mimi on Saturday, May 13, for a 2-hour class to dip, drizzle, and decorate chocolate-coated strawberries, pretzels, and marshmallows that will be arranged as an edible bouquet to present to mom. Two sessions: Kids in 2nd-6th grade, from 10:00 am – 12:00 pm, register HERE and Tweens/Teens in 7th-12th grade, from 12:30 pm- 2:30 pm, register HERE.
(6) Year End Evaluations: Families need to make plans for their year-end, Virginia-required “Evidence of Progress” (EOP) for their homeschooled students. This can be accomplished through a meeting with an evaluator or a standardized test administered at home. Compass writing teacher Shannon McClain performs year-end homeschool evaluations. Contact her at her business, Educational Advocacy & Support, or call/stop by the Compass office to schedule an evaluation time slot.
(7) First Aid/CPR: One First Aid/CPR workshop has filled, so a second workshop has been scheduled on May 14 and May 21 from 1:00 pm- 4:00 pm. Teens can earn 4 American Heart Association certifications and get ready and get ready for summer work as a life guard, camp counselor, or babysitter in this 6-hour (2-afternoon program) Register HERE.
(8) Annual Quads Chess Tournament: Registration is now open for the 2023 Homeschool Quads Chess Tournament on Wednesday, May 24 from 10:00 am- 12:30 pm. Homeschool players ages 6- 16 from around the area are invited for a morning of chess. The morning tournament is limited to 48 players. If we have enough interest, a second, afternoon tournament will be added. Sign up on the Activity Fees webpage.
(9) Food Truck Week: Food trucks will be at Compass for lunch on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, April 18-20. Watch for an announcement on Monday with menus and pre-order links.
(10) 2023-24 Look-Ahead: Planning is underway for next year’s classes. Classes are being uploaded to the registration page in batches. This page will show as “under construction” until all classes are uploaded. Families can check back periodically to watch as additional classes are added. The full schedule of classes will be available online and in a paper worksheet no later than May 1. Early registration will open on Tuesday, May 16, at 6:00 am.
