Compass Reboot: In-Person and Online Classes, New Location

Compass has some exciting announcements about the evolution of our program for the 2020-21 school year! Our “reboot” involves a complete reimagining of how we “do” Compass including in-person and virtual classes, a new location, 5-day per week schedule, and updated COVID plan. Registration will reopen Friday, August 14 at 6:00 am, for more than 100 small group, in-person classes and 34 online classes. We invite the area’s many new homeschool families and virtual public school families to consider Compass classes, and we look forward to seeing our returning, veteran homeschool families.

SMALL GROUP, IN-PERSON CLASSES

Compass is offering dozens of hands-on, interactive, small-group in-person classes with reduced enrollment of just 6-8 students. Smaller class sizes will allow us to deliver this instruction safely but with the advantages of face-to-face learning alongside classmates. Look at the 131 options for Kindergarten through 12th grade students in math, science, nature, technology, robotics, language arts, history, foreign language, and just-for-fun classes.

ONLINE CLASSES

Online classes are offered to accommodate students who are not ready to return to in-person instruction and several teachers who are unable to return to a group setting this fall. Read about the alternate modes of instruction in these classes and check class details to understand if a class may transition to in-person meetings second semester or if the class will remain entirely online.

NEW LOCATION

In mid-July, Compass was notified that our former meeting location had decided to close its campus through May 2021. We rallied to move our program to a new location and are pleased to share our new facility at 520 Herndon Parkway, directly off Fairfax County Parkway and Spring Street. Check out our new Location webpage for directions, photos, and details about amenities in the area. Watch Facebook for behind-the-scenes photos as our new space receives a makeover and furnishings in time for our grand re-opening this September.

5-DAYS PER WEEK

Compass classes will now be held 5 days per week! We think that in light of COVID, families will be more comfortable with smaller gatherings of a 5-day per week schedule. K-8 programming is offered in-person on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. Fridays will remain our Compass teen day with high school classes, but you will also find high school classes other days of the week, both in-person and online. As always, registration for Compass classes is a university-style, a la carte system where you can mix and match classes to enhance your homeschool or virtual school week.

UPDATED COVID PLAN

We believe that with common sense precautions, we can safely offer small, in-person classes this fall. With our new facility and recently updated community guidelines, the Compass COVID Plan has been revised. As with all other homeschooling decisions, each family is empowered to decide if the protocols and precautions outlined in the plan are sufficient to meet their own needs, expectations, and address their own COVID concerns.

DISCOUNT

The 10% Early Registration Discount has been extended through August 31.

OTHER

Most of Compass’s extracurricular activities, community events, academic contests, and awards programs will continue in our new venue. Some will change, and we hope that new opportunities and traditions are started.
