Compass News & Updates: Week of Sept. 19
Compass is off to a great start this fall. We welcomed more than 540 students from 370 families in early September. Now that classes are in full swing, below are some activities and events to add to your calendar:
- The 2nd Quarter Schedule is available! Families can view the schedule online or pick up a paper copy at Compass. Early registration opens Tuesday, September 27 at 6:00 am. There is a 10% early discount for those who complete registration by October 15. Families of teens in 9th-12th grade classes should watch for Priority Registration links several days in advance.
- Annual Usborne Homeschool Book Fair: The annual Fall Homeschool Book Fair featuring Usborne books will take place October 4-6 in Suite C from 10:00 am – 3:00 pm each day. The Usborne Books representative will have dozens of titles on hand including the Top 100 Homeschool Favorites. Special discounts are available at the book fair.
- School Pictures: Annual “school” pictures with photographer Angela Goodhart of Goodhart Photography will take place the week of October 17, from 10:00 am – 1:00 pm each day. Weather permitting, pictures will be taken outdoors with a natural background. There is no fee to have pictures taken- only if you decide to purchase digitals or hard copies. Families can have individual and sibling group poses. Non-Compass siblings and family members are welcome. Sign-ups begin on Monday, October 3.
- First Aid & CPR Workshop: Teens and adults can earn 4 American Heart Association certifications in this two-day workshop on November 7 and November 14. Register HERE.
- Compass Parents’ Facebook Group: Join the Compass Parents’ Association Facebook page for a forum to connect with other families: playdates, meet-ups, park outing, carpools, parent proxies, share resources. This is moderated, private page for current Compass families only.
- Private Instruction/Tutoring is available at Compass, by Compass teachers/partners in math, reading, writing, study skills, college prep, SAT/ACT prep, French, Spanish, Mandarin, history, and science. Also, one-on-one, private lessons or small group semi-private lessons are available in sewing, piano, voice, violin, trumpet, flute, clarinet, ukulele, recorder, and guitar. - Compass Collaborative Student Newspaper: Students are invited to contribute articles, short stories, poems, comics, jokes/riddles, drawings, or photographs to the newspaper. Parents are asked to share good news about students: honors, awards, college admissions, etc. The staff is also seeking parents with businesses to advertise in the newspaper. - Alpha Rho Chapter, National Homeschool Honor Society: Applications are being accepted from 9th-12th graders (or 8th graders doing high school work) for the Compass chapter national homeschool honor society. The group meets every other week on Fridays from 3:00 pm- 4:15 pm, alternating meetings and service projects. See webpage for more information and application.
- President’s Volunteer Service Awards: Students may now sign up for the 2022-23 PVSA awards to recognize their community service work. Students track hours from Sept 1 through August 31 to earn medals and certificates. See webpage for more information and sign up on the Activity Fees webpage.

- Homeschool String Ensemble (4th-8th grade) meets on Wednesday, Sept. 21 from 11:00 am – 11:55 am
- Crazy 8s Junior Math Club (2nd-5th grade) meets Wednesday, Sept. 21 from 3:00 pm- 4:00 pm
- Tween Game Afternoon (ages 10-13) meets every Wednesday from 3:00 pm- 4:00 pm
- MATHCOUNTS Team (6th-8th grade) meets on Thursday, Sept. 22 from 3:00 pm- 4:00 pm
- Civil Air Patrol (ages 12-18) meets Thursday, Sept. 22 from 7:00 pm- 9:00 pm
- Mock Trial Team (9th-12th grade) meets on Friday, Sept. 23 from 3:00 pm- 4:30 pm
- TGIF Teen Game Night (ages 13+) meets every Friday from 4:30 pm- 6:30 pm
