Compass High School Mock Trial Team

Compass has a high school Mock Trial team! Last year, the team participated in Virginia High School Mock Trial Competition in Williamsburg where three members received awards for individual performances, and the new team placed 4th in the state. Mock Trial provides students with an “authentic project-based courtroom experience” with substantial work as a team while honing personal skills in logic, debate, public speaking, and presentation, and learning about the American judicial system.

The team welcomes new members for the 2018-19 year. Candidates should be in 9th-12th grade (motived 8th graders will be considered.) The ideal team member will have experience in public speaking and/or debate and strong presentation and speaking skills. New members will serve as alternates/understudies during their first year as they “learn the ropes”, rules, and proceedings of mock trial, with the expectation of moving into attorney and witness roles the following year. All members will be expected to participate in all practices/strategy sessions. In accordance with state rules for teams, mock trial is only open to current, registered 2018-19 Compass students.

Anyone interested in Mock Trial should first contact the team manager through the Compass Contact Page. Interested members should plan attend the first team meeting on Friday, September 21.

The Mock Trial team meets on the first, third, and fourth Friday of each month from 3:00 pm- 4:15 pm from mid-September through early March. The team will participate in a regional competition on February 2, 2019, and an overnight, out-of-town state competition in early March. The Compass Mock Trial team follows the Virginia High School Mock Trial Program of the Virginia Law Related Education Institute which falls under the governance of the National High School Mock Trial Championship.
